Suggestions for Successful R/C Flight

The recommended first plane should be one of the fine “40” sized trainers sold by this hobby shop. It will have a flat bottom wing, with enough dihedral to help stabilize itself during flight and make it easier to fly. This plane must have Ailerons, Elevator, Rudder and Throttle control, which are the four basic functions used on all airplanes. Kits are nice, if you have the time to build, but, we recommend an Almost Ready to Fly (ARF) as your first plane, since, the cost of building your plane from a kit, will often exceed that of an ARF! We also recommend a few of the RTF planes. (Examples: Thunder Tiger 40, Hangar 9 Extra Easy and Global Right Flier 40). However, these do not provide you with a choice of radio equipment nor engine; you get what comes with the “package”. They offer the basics, (at a good price) but do not provide for, nor extend to your future needs.

The recommended initial “40” engine should actually be a ball bearing “46”. We say this because a “46 BB” will have the power to easily fly your plane and, can be more useful than a “40” sized bushing type engine in many future planes you might acquire. Your hobby shop dealer should have several engine types and prices that he could recommend.

The radio system should have the basic four functions. (Ailerons, Elevator, Rudder and Throttle control). RCD Hitec makes and sells an FM radio that meets this criteria, and includes four channel reversing, plus four channel end point adjustment. This, is the radio that we recommend! If, however, other manufacturers offer the same functions at or near the same price, we would also recommend their radios. One radio manufacturer we cannot recommend is JR. This, is due to their special need for a powered Buddy Box. Since, we do not have one in our stock, we can not comply. The Eagles can “Buddy Box” (meaning use dual control training methods) instruct on all other brands of radios compatible with Futaba and Airtronics.

Before you do anything with your new plane, check it for missing parts! Compare what you have in the box against the published parts list shown in the assembly manual. THEN, read the instruction manual from end to end TWICE! Make sure you understand what is requested/required before proceeding.

Assembling your new ARF will usually consist of gluing the two wing halves together and gluing on the Horizontal Stabilizer and Vertical Fin. Use 15 minute epoxy for these tasks. This, will give you time to align the parts/assemblies according to the instruction manual. Make sure the trailing and leading edges of the wing match and block up one wing half so that very little gap exists between the center mated wing ribs. Make sure that the vertical fin “bottoms out” on the horizontal stabilizer and the sides of the fuselage so that there will be a lot of surface area for the glue to “grab”. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS AGAIN BEFORE MAKING ANY OF THESE ASSEMBLIES!

Use the “instant” glues (CA) to glue in the hinges on the ailerons, elevator and rudder as per the instructions. (Sometimes, there are right and left ailerons and elevator halves).

Your hobby shop might offer you a special “deal” on all of the items needed to finish your model. This, may include the correct propeller for your engine, and the equipment you will need at the field to get your plane into the air. (Field box, electric starter with a full cone insert, glow plug igniter, fuel pump and fuel)

The River District R/C Eagles are concerned that you have a fine initial experience and thus, will enjoy and continue in this great hobby. Your dealer has a list of Eagles’ and other area club members who offer their help and will answer any additional questions that you may have. He will also inform you of the schedule for planned R/C Classes and their location.
